When selecting a heat pump, “size” refers to its heating and cooling capacity, measured in kilowatts (kW), rather than the physical dimensions of the unit.
The right capacity depends on more than floor area. Your home’s insulation, windows, ceiling height and layout all play a part.
Start with your space
Think about the room or area you want to heat and cool. Is it a bedroom, a separate lounge or a living area that opens into the kitchen and dining room?
Larger spaces generally need more capacity. High ceilings also increase the volume of air that needs to be heated or cooled, while open doorways can allow air to move into adjoining areas.
A single heat pump should not automatically be expected to maintain an even temperature throughout several separate rooms.
Look beyond room size
Two rooms with the same floor area can have quite different requirements.
Insulation: Well insulated walls and ceilings help your home retain warmth in winter and limit heat gain in summer.
Windows and sunlight: Large windows, glazing type and direct sunlight can affect how much heating or cooling a room needs.
Location: Local climate matters. A home in a colder part of New Zealand may have different heating requirements from one in a milder region.
Layout and placement: The position of the indoor unit, furniture and internal walls can influence how effectively air circulates.
Why the right capacity matters
A heat pump that is too small may struggle to reach your preferred temperature, particularly during very cold or hot weather.
Choosing a larger unit than necessary is not always the answer either. An oversized system can cost more upfront and, depending on its operating range, may cycle on and off more often than a correctly sized unit.
The aim is to match the system to your space and how you use it.
